Supplemental Educational Services (SES) FREE Tutoring

Because HOPE Charter High School is in Corrective Action II, students who qualify for free or reduced priced lunch may apply for free tutoring in Reading, Mathematics and Science through Supplemental Educational Services (SES). Sessions are provided after school, or during the summer by Pennsylvania Department of Education approved providers. The providers work to help students build and strengthen the skills they’ll need to be successful. You can meet providers at our back-to-school events and selected parent meetings, and we also notify our parents by regular mail.

Before you apply:

  • Review the list of providers, which you can view by clicking here
  • Before making a choice, talk with providers over the telephone or arrange to meet with them to discuss your child’s needs.
  • Contact the SES Coordinator, William Jeffreys, at 267 336 2730 ext 5552 if you would like more help to choose a provider.

To apply for SES:

  • Complete the front side of the Free Tutoring Provider Selection Form and indicate three choices from the list of approved providers.
    • It is important to make three choices in case your first choice is not able to provide the services.
    • If your child is eligible for SES and your first/second choice is not available, HOPE Charter School will automatically assign your child to your next available choice.
  • Turn the form over to read the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Sign and date the form where indicated to allow HOPE to release academic information to the provider you have chosen.
  • To return the application:
    • Give the completed application to your provider of first choice. The provider will return the completed application to our school; or
    • Mail the completed application to:
      HOPE Charter High School
      SES Coordinator
      2116 Haines Street
      Philadelphia, Pa. 19138
  • Parents and families can sign up during two Open Enrollment periods:
    August 15th to September 23th, 2011
    Janauary 2rd to February 2th, 2012
  • You will receive a postcard to confirm that your application has been received.
  • If your child is eligible for services, the approved provider will contact you to tell you when tutoring services will begin.
  • If your child is not eligible, you will receive a letter from our school.
  • If there is not enough funding to provide services to all students who apply, HOPE Charter School must give priority to providing services to the lowest-achieving eligible students.

How are parents notified about SES?
Parents are notified via U.S. Mail. Inside the packet will be a letter notifying the parent of the progress of their child's school, information on SES, information on SES providers, as well as an application to apply and an envelope to return the application to the school.

  • SES providers will be available to speak to parents at selected parent nights.
  • SES information will be posted on our website.
  • SES information packets will be available in the Student Services area at school, and at our administrative offices at 100 W. Coulter Street.
  • All parents/guardians will be receiving reminder calls via the “one call now” messaging system before the deadline to sign up.
  • HCS will promote the program within the school building and administrative offices.
  • Reminder post cards will be sent to parents before the final application deadline.
